Ah, the blooming of wildflowers and the return of migratory birds: welcome to Spring! And welcome to Alpine paradise in Leavenworth! Here we celebrate Spring every year with a local festival called Bird Fest.
It's a remarkable little festival that offers something for everyone. Are you a casual bird observer who wants to get out with your kids? Come take advantage of the many free offerings on Family Day, Saturday May 20th. No advance registration is required for great low impact activities like the Family Nature and Bird Walk, as well as the hands-on science and art activities. Or you can expand your horizons and register for “Birding by Ear” to explore the art of identifying Flycatchers and Warblers by their songs.
And speaking of song, don't miss the Song Bird Concert at the Snowy Owl theater that same day, featuring local musical talent. (I know, because I found my son's name on the program while researching this piece. He's a high school senior and I guess didn't think he needed to tell his mom since he'll be flying the coop soon. Leaving the nest, so to speak. 🙂 Bad puns aside, I'm glad I found out because I never tire of hearing Jonah sing and play the piano and am confident you'll love him and all the others, too.)
If adventure is what you are after, Bird Fest offers activities that combine birdwatching with play. You can choose from river rafting, stand up paddle boarding, or kayaking, and a guide will take you down the river, helping you spot birds along the way. Mountain biking is another option, though I haven't been able to imagine looking through binoculars while navigating the twists and turns of downhill biking! Apparently it works because this is a popular event and has been part of Bird fest for many years.
Now for the serious birder hoping to make it a “Big Year,” or to anyone focused on identifying as many birds as possible. During last year's 4 day Bird Festival, there were 130 species of birds identified. These numbers can surely be attributed to the area's diversity. Whether your quest takes you to the mountains or the forests, to rivers or shrub steppes, or all of the above, you are sure to witness some winged friends thriving in this amazing area. Just think, after one weekend you could be nearly 1/5 the way to breaking a Big Year record!
Maybe your best bird watching will come from the deck of your local vacation rental. Bring a bit of bird seed along and treat your native guests right from your home away from home.
