One of the most stunning sights in all of Washington State is lesser-known Lake Chelan. Located in the shadows of the North Cascades, Lake Chelan is nearly 1,500 feet deep with crystal blue water and miles of white sandy beaches ideal for soaking in the sunshine.
The stunning blue waters offer something for everyone. Go kayaking, snorkel the clear lake, waterski, paddleboard, water tube … almost anything you would want to do on the lake, you can do at Lake Chelan!
Here are just a few of the many water activities you can enjoy while exploring the endless beauty of Lake Chelan:
Boating / Water Activities
Lake Chelan is a boater’s paradise. Rent or bring your own boat for a day on the lake! There are a few year-round public boat launches, and several seasonal launches on Lake Chelan. Click on the Chamber of Commerce link for helpful information and to view a map with launches, pump-out and refueling stations.
Fishing
Fishing in Lake Chelan is a popular activity for locals and tourists alike. Each year, stocking programs release 100,000 Cutthroat and 500,000 Kokanee into the lake, so if you love fishing or want to give it a try, this is where you want to be! You must register with the Department of Fish and Wildlife for a fishing permit, which is available at local Kelly Ace Hardware and the Chelan Walmart.
Swimming
During the summer, grab your suit and head to the lake! July – August are the best months to swim as the water has had a chance to warm up a bit. There are over 50 miles of shoreline on Lake Chelan, so plenty of beach and swimming options. Locals consider the South End to be the best swimming spot due to the clear waters.
Snorkeling
Lake Chelan’s stunning water clarity provides the perfect environment for snorkeling. Kids love exploring for treasures found on the lake floor. Many of the shops in town sell masks and fins.
Kayak / Stand Up Paddle Board
A fun way to see the lake from a different perspective is by paddling around in a kayak or on a paddle board. If the big lake is daunting, try one of the smaller lakes near Manson, or the Chelan River at Riverwalk Park. If you don’t bring your own, rent one!
Water Ski & Wakeboard
One of the most popular recreation activities on the lake is being pulled behind a fast-moving boat on skis, a tube or a wakeboard. Often the best time for calm water is in the morning or late afternoon.
Scuba Diving
Lake Chelan’s upper basin, Lucerne Basin, is among the top three deepest gorges in the nation. When the lake is at “full pool” during the summer, the gorge dips 386 feet below sea level. Scuba divers come from far and wide to dive to great depths.
